For the Continuum Curious, The World of Aberrant in 2018...
almost 5 years ago – Fri, Jul 05, 2019 at 04:01:49 PM

Hello to the Continuum Curious today,

For those who are checking this campaign out, wondering what it's about and if they should back, today I'll share a little from our manuscript preview to shed a tiny bit of light on the setting.

This project, Trinity Continuum: Aberrant, is a rules & setting supplement and requires the Trinity Continuum Core Rulebook to play.

Trinity Continuum is a roleplaying game about possibilities and human potential. In the continuum, you will portray characters who can act and achieve even the most outlandish goals. You could find yourself in a heist to save ancient artifacts from the hands of villains, rescuing innocents from natural disasters, investigating strange technologies, or saving people from dangerous anomalies born of weird science. Trinity Continuum isn’t a single game, but is instead the framework for multiple different games. All with a slightly different focus or action, but all involving a single unifying theme: Nothing is impossible.

The Trinity Continuum contains multiple timelines, various time periods, and different genres of play. In the core book we present a modern-day setting in which you could enjoy many different genres of play, such as action-adventure, mystery, heist, do-gooders saving the world, or investigating weird science. Much of the game’s eccentricities come from science fiction in the broadest sense of the phrase. Anything that could account for strange occurrences, near-future realism, or farfetched future devices falls under that umbrella.

The Trinity Continuum: Aberrant book expands the Trinity Continuum timeline with a new system and setting featuring the superheroes for a new age, a world a decade in the future, with seeds planted in the early 21st century. In the timeline of Aberrant, 2018 started very differently...

Aberrant Timeline

March 23rd, 2018, N-Day — the day the world changed forever. Following the tragic explosion of the space station Galatea in orbit, people around the world began displaying superhuman abilities of an unexplained nature, starting with New York City firefighter Randel Portman, later known as “the Fireman.” In the days and weeks following, dozens more people manifested powers, leading to a worldwide state of emergency. It was soon clear that the world would never quite be the same again, as the miraculous and the extraordinary became the order of the day.

2018 — Eruptions

March 23, 12:18 p.m. GST: The research space station Galatea explodes, killing the astronauts on board and dumping radioactive material into Earth’s atmosphere.

March 23, 3:31 p.m. GST: In New York City, firefighter Randel Portman manifests superhuman powers, absorbing all the heat and flames from a multi-alarm apartment building blaze without harm to himself. Portman’s first superhuman feat is captured on video and he is quickly dubbed “the Fireman” by the media.

March - April: Dozens of other people with “aberrant powers” appear worldwide, leading to widespread panic, states of emergency, and emergency sessions of the United Nations.

April 2: The Æon Society initiates a dialog with the United Nations, offering to seek out and study the phenomenon to learn more about it. The term “nova” is adopted in response to the early suggested taxonomy of Homo sapiens novus, the scientific speculation that these people are a subspecies or mutant offshoot of baseline humanity. The term “baseline” enters common use not long thereafter.

May 1: The Æon Society publicly issues an invitation to open dialog with any interested novas to help them study and understand their abilities. The UN works diplomatically to assure the world that Æon can handle the nova outbreak, as more novas continue to manifest their abilities worldwide. The sometimes violent, elemental nature of the first manifestation of a nova’s powers leads to the term “eruption.”

June 30: The United Nations issues the Zurich Accord, affirming the human rights (and responsibilities) of novas: Whatever their abilities, the Accord says, novas are still human beings, and must be treated accordingly.

July 1: The Æon Society tasks its Project Utopia division with finding ways to harness the powers of novas for the good of the world, as much for public relations and to calm widespread fears as for practical reasons.

October: The aftershocks of N-Day create apocalyptic cults and backlash against novas, along with groups practically worshipping them. Public opinion on novas is deeply divided, with concern about when the continued eruption of new novas will end, if ever.

December 4: Drs. Mazarin and Rashoud, Triton Foundation researchers, release their initial findings from scientific studies of novas. These included what is termed “Mazarin-Rashoud (or MR) flux” detected in brain-scans, and “MR coils” in cellular examinations, the first clear physical differences discerned between novas and baseline Homo sapiens. Their use of “baseline human” in their writings reinforces the use of “baseline” in popular culture to refer to non-novas. The Mazarin-Rashoud report suggests nova abilities are based on mental manipulation of fundamental quantum forces: gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear force, leading to the popular association of “quantum” with novas and their powers.

Profile: Henri Mazarin and Farah Rashoud

Despite the public perception of overnight success, Drs. Rashoud and Mazarin have both been involved in research for the Æon Society for years leading up to N-Day. Both have had long careers working for the Triton Foundation in their respective specialties, but it was the nova phenomenon that brought them together.

Since releasing their findings on MR coils and flux, both Farah and Henri have been on permanent loan to Project Utopia. Neither researcher has an official place in Utopia’s organizational structure, but both are considered giants in the field and everyone defers to them or seeks their advice on projects.

Their names are intertwined, but they each have their own interests and don’t work directly together that often. Dr. Rashoud studies how emotional stressors precipitate the eruption process, and how these can be predicted, guided, or even prevented. Dr. Mazarin is more interested in nova physiology and medicine, and understanding how quantum flux can have such a varied expression of effects on human cells while maintaining a viable living creature. Henri is also concerned that despite the numerous discoveries and papers coming from his lab, his career will never experience another shining moment of recognition without his constantly-named partner. Farah is less concerned about this, in part because her name and screening procedures are synonymous with the Rashoud Facilities across the world. This fact has caused some resentment and professional jealousy in Dr. Mazarin, but not enough to sour their relationship.

December 31: The Æon Society’s estimates there are some 200 novas worldwide.

The Trinity Continuum in 2028

Now, ten years later, in 2028, the world is indeed a different place, but perhaps not as changed as some hoped or feared. Some two thousand people worldwide have “erupted” into what is believed to be a new evolutionary subspecies of humanity, Homo sapiens novus, commonly known as “novas” and less flatteringly as “aberrants.” Their presence and powers have changed the world and may offer hope for a better future, or a looming threat greater than any humanity has ever faced — or both.

Backers of this campaign will have access to weekly Manuscript Preview updates, each featuring a few chapters from the Trinity Continuum: Aberrant book. By the time this campaign concludes, you'll have the entire manuscript in hand. Since this game requires the rules from the Trinity Continuum Core Rulebook, I'll also be sharing a Storypath rules primer and the complete Character Creation chapter from the Core Rulebook to help provide some background and a foundation for Aberrant.

If you'd like to follow along, choose a reward tier and then check out Update #1 - the first manuscript preview featuring the History and Setting for the Trinity Continuum: Aberrant world.

The power is in your hands.

FUNDED! And First Stretch Goals...
almost 5 years ago – Fri, Jul 05, 2019 at 03:54:13 PM

Hello Continuum Community,

We've done it! Thanks to you, Trinity Continuum: Aberrant has been funded!

It's James, your point person for this kickstarter campaign.
It's James, your point person for this kickstarter campaign.

This means that you've funded a print run of the hardcover edition of Trinity Continuum: Aberrant, which will be as awesome and amazing as Onyx Path can make it! It'll be a fantastic reward for backers to thank them for their support, and a portion of the print run will be sold into the game and hobby trade to continue to support this industry and the Trinity Continuum around the world!

By why stop there...

As we increase the overall funding and support for the project, we’re able to add additional resources to the project, expand the rewards listed, and add in new offers and opportunities. Each Stretch Goal will have a target that, once reached, will add a project to the reward list. We will continue to build on this list when we achieve these targets during the campaign. Whenever we achieve a stretch goal, the image will be updated to reflect the achievement.

At $47,000 in funding - NEW ADD ON - Creation of an Aberrant-themed Storyguide Screen, offered as a +$20 ADD ON to any reward tier that includes the hardcover version of Trinity Continuum: Aberrant. This three panel screen will feature action-packed Aberrant art on the outer side and a selection of charts and other info on the inside to make the Storyguide's job a little bit easier.

At $51,000 in funding - ABERRANT COMIC COMPILATION - "You Are Not Alone" by Paul Jenkins & Doug Stambaugh - the Trinity Continuum: Aberrant webcomic will be compiled into a single PDF and automatically added to all reward tiers

At $59,000 in funding - N!WE N!TERNATIONAL WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT - A new PDF product discussing the N!WE, the performers and industry personnel, and various elements of professional wrestling in the world of Aberrant. All backers receiving the PDF version of Trinity Continuum: Aberrant will have this automatically added to their rewards list.

Now that we've accomplished our primary goal - with the majority of the campaign still ahead of us - let's add additional options and support in the form of these Stretch Goals! And if we continue on, we can continue to expand everyone's Rewards List as we hit new increased levels of funding!  We're just scratching the surface with new content, so let's keep going and see what we can add to the Continuum!

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING
almost 5 years ago – Fri, Jul 05, 2019 at 01:54:23 PM

Greetings Continuum Community!

Some novas with Mega-speed may travel quickly, but unfortunately these books are a little more difficult to send around the world.

The cost of producing these Trinity Continuum books has already gone up a bit, but the real impact will be felt by backers like myself – non-US residents that fall under the umbrella of “International Shipping.”

For the past few years, Onyx Path has tried to keep shipping charges as affordable as possible, including subsidizing the shipping charges using the margin from the books that were being created and shipped! But that way is untenable, and will lead to disaster.

So, with the cost of shipping going up, again, Onyx Path has unfortunately had to follow suit and increase the additional shipping costs on the kickstarter rewards sent to International backers.

For some, this may prove a difficult hurdle to overcome. To that end, I just wanted to make sure everyone was aware up front and early in the process, and to provide a list of alternative ideas and considerations.

PDF ONLY – I’m an old-school, physical book fan – my copies of many rulebooks are covered in sticky notes marking often-referenced sections throughout the rules. I like being able to flip through physical books when building my characters.

But, I’m also running out of shelf space. And, though I often own the physical book, I end up using the PDF version as my go-to reference during play, especially when most of my gaming lately has been online and I’ve got two screens already up and running for the game. Going digital not only saves shelf space – and trees! – but also saves shipping charges with instant download delivery. If you’ve been thinking about going digital only, perhaps this project is the tipping point for that direction.

MULTI-BUY – acting as the point person with a partner or for your whole gaming group will allow you to pledge to the Dynamic Duo or Super Squad reward tiers, and have multiple copies sent in a single shipment. While it’s still expensive to ship, dividing the cost between 2 or 5 books may bring it down to a manageable level.

RETAIL ORDER – If you have a friendly local gaming store, perhaps you can pre-order a copy and get them to back at the F.N.R.T. reward tier, which provides retailers with 5 copies to sell to their customers.

ORDER THE HARDCOVER LATER – You could hold off on getting the hardcover version now, hoping that your local store will carry the book. The goal for this campaign is to fund at least one print run and get it into the game & hobby trade so that retailers not participating in the kickstarter will still be able to order it as part of their regular business. You may have to remind the store owners and get them to order it for you, but if you've got a solid store that you regularly visit, this is a solid option.

PRINT-ON-DEMAND - Onyx Path’s partners at DrivethruRPG.com use various PoD companies to create their Print-on-Demand versions, and these companies may have locations closer to your home and charge less for shipping. Before too much longer, the Trinity Continuum Core Rulebook and Trinity Continumm: Æon setting book will be available as PoD items, as are most of the other Onyx Path lines. Eventually, Trinity Continuum: Aberrant will be as well. You could back at the Elite and Sidekick reward tier level and wait for the eventual PoD release to order a physical book, which will possibly have lower shipping costs depending on your location.

FREIGHT FORWARDING – Another option is to join up with a freight forwarder or global shopping company. If you join up with a company like ARAMEX, for example, they provide you with a US address for Onyx Path to ship to. Once they receive your package, they provide different options to ship from their facility to you. I believe you can even combine a few shipments from different vendors, so this may be an idea for someone looking to purchase multiple items from the US.

YOU HAVE TIME TO DECIDE – This campaign has just started and will run for 4 weeks. Backing now allows you to follow along with our updates and manuscript previews, but you don’t have to make your final backing decision now – you can click on any reward tier and change your options up until the campaign ends.

Additionally, we will be running a post-campaign pledge manager with BackerKit after the campaign has ended, which will allow kickstarter backers to shift their pledges to a higher tier (and pay for the adjustment) up until the books are ready to ship, allowing you to contemplate all options before committing any further dollars.

While none of these solutions is ideal – personally, I can’t wait for teleportation technology! – there are more options than a simple binary choice. And there’s time to think it through. And know that I’m right there with you – shipping to Canada is TEN TIMES the cost of shipping within the US, and likely to get more expensive in time.

Good luck, fellow International Backers, and please share any other ideas you may have in the comments.
